Graphical Data

Often data in which we are interested does not have a fixed value, but varies with some parameter. For example, many material properties vary with temperature (eg. the cost of a manufacturing process per unit varies with the total number of units that are made).

Graphical Data for a record property can be viewed as a :
  • value evaluated at fixed parameter values
  • graph (interpolated)
  • matrix of source point data

A graph displays the multi-linear interpolation of the source data and can be replotted by changing the following parameters :

Graphical Data On A Datasheet

Properties whose value can vary are indicated on a datasheet by a graph Graphical Data icon.

The value given on the datasheet is evaluated at the fixed parameter values shown directly below the property name.
  • Use the 'Show/Hide All Graphs' tool at the top of the datasheet to view graphs in the datasheet.
  • To view or change a single graph, click on the graph icon or the graph itself in the datasheet.
  • Click the information Notes icon to show further information about the property in a Notes view.
To change the parameter value at which graphical data is evaluated :
  1. On the datasheet, click 'Parameters' below the property name.
  2. The main content pane will display the Parameters for the property.
  3. Choose a value from the drop down list, or enter a value.
  4. Click the 'Submit' button.
  5. The main area returns to the datasheet.

Graph View

The Graph View displays a single graph. The Legend allows you to change the parameter plotted on the X-Axis, the values of the fixed parameters and which parameters are free, if applicable.

At the top of the graph view, the following tools can be found :
  • 'Show Data' - Display the source data on which the graph is based.
  • Back to Datasheet
To change the Parameter plotted on the X-Axis :
  1. Click on the graph icon or graph in the datasheet.
  2. Click 'Change' for the X-Axis in the Legend.
  3. Choose a parameter.
  4. Click the 'Submit' button.
  5. You are returned to the graph view with the new X-Axis.
To change the Free Parameters :
  1. Click on the graph icon or graph in the datasheet.
  2. Click 'Change' for the Free Parameter in the Legend.
  3. Tick the appropriate box to choose the free parameters.
  4. Click the 'Submit' button.
  5. You are returned to the graph view with the new free parameters.
To change the Fixed Parameter values:
  1. Click on the graph icon or graph in the datasheet.
  2. Click 'Change' for the Fixed Parameters in the Legend.
  3. Choose a Parameter value from the drop down list or enter a value.
  4. Click the 'Submit' button.
  5. You are returned to the graph view with the new fixed parameter values.

Note: Changing the value of a fixed parameter changes the value throughout the database.

In order to restore the default graphs, choose the options labelled as 'default' in the 'Choose Values' column, and make sure that any boxes in the 'Enter value' column are clear.

Source View

The source data is shown in a table and contains no interpolated values.
  • Click on a column heading to sort the table by selected column.
  • Click on the column heading again to alter the order of the sort (ascending/descending).
At the top of the source view, the following tools can be found :
  • 'Save As CSV File' - Download a copy of the data (in comma-separated format).
  • 'Show Graph' - Display the graph interpolated from the source data.
  • Back to Datasheet
