Search

A search facility is available in The PGM Database. This enables you to search the currently selected database for words or phrases. Wildcard and phrase searches are also supported.

There are two search features : 'Quick Search' and 'Search'.

Quick Search

The quick search feature is located on The PGM Database's toolbar. It searches all tables in the database.

To perform a quick search :
  1. Type the text or keywords to search for into the box.
  2. Click the quick search button.
A list of matching search results is displayed. To view a datasheet for a search result, click on the link on the record's name.

The number of results displayed per page is a user preference and can be altered on the preferences page.

Example : Typing 'casting' into the search box and clicking the quick search button gives results whose datasheet contain the word 'casting'.

Search

The search feature is similar to the 'Quick Search' feature, but also gives the option of searching in a particular table only.

To perform a search :
  1. Click 'search' on the toolbar.
  2. A page will be displayed with a search box.
  3. Type the text or keywords to search for into the box.
  4. Set the search scope to 'All Tables' or an individual table from the drop down list.
  5. Click the 'Search' button.

Search Criteria

The text input as a search string can consist of any number of words, separated by spaces. The words will be combined using the AND operator unless otherwise specified.

When performing a search, the short name (tree name), full name and any text attributes of each record are searched. All tables in the database are searched, unless otherwise specified.

Search Operators

The following search operators are available :
  • AND finds both terms in a datasheet.
  • OR finds either term in a datasheet.
  • Binary NOT finds datasheets that conatin the first term, but not the second.
  • Phrase searching finds a phrase in a datasheet. The phrase must be enclosed in quotes.
  • Wildcard operator * matches any sequence of characters. It must be preceded by one or more alphanumeric characters.
AND : platinum AND alloy will find results containing both the words 'platinum' and 'alloy'.
OR : platinum OR alloy will find results containing either the word 'platinum', the word 'alloy' or both.
NOT : platinum NOT alloy will find results containing the word 'platinum' but not the word 'alloy'.
Phrase Search : "platinum alloy" will find results with the words 'platinum' and 'alloy' located next to each other.
Wildcard Search : metal* will find results containing the words 'metal', 'metals', 'metallic', etc....

Search Results

The search results returned from a text search are a list of records that contain all of the words searched for. The list gives the tree name of each record, listed in alphabetical order.

The number of results found and navigational tools to browse through the results are shown at the top of the list.

The number of results displayed per page is a user preference and can be altered on the preferences page.
